HANDSELL HOURS:  Grounds are open to the public 7 days a week during daylight hours with Wayside Exhibits, Longhouse Living History Exhibit and Exterior Viewing of the Handsell House, self-guided tours.  Special Group Tours by appointment, contact us.   Handsell House is open for special events only:  Chicone Village Day and the Nanticoke River Jamboree and EVERY Summer Saturday mid-June through Labor Day, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. with special programming weekly.

Handsell is located just off the Nanticoke River Route 50 bridge, north of Vienna in Dorchester County, MD.  Dorchester County has been designated  a Heritage Tourism County and Handsell is a designated Heritage Area Site.

Six Wayside Signs will “walk you” through time from the natives in the 1600’s, the African American story and to the history of the house itself!  Plus, the Chicone Village longhouse, work shelter and garden can be seen anytime during daylight hours.  Guide by Cell audio tour is also available.

Directions to Handsell at 4837 Indiantown Road, Vienna, MD 21869:

From Wilmington, DE:  Take 301 South to 50 East. Follow below in bold.

From Washington, DC., Baltimore:  Annapolis Bay Bridge East to Rt. 50 East.  Past Easton and Cambridge.  16 miles east of Cambridge, before the Nanticoke River Bridge, take last exit for Vienna, Rt. 331 North.  Make left at end of ramp. Follow directions below in bold.

Take first right onto Indiantown Road.  (“Scenic Maryland” and “Handsell Historic Site” sign is here).  Road makes sharp turn to left, follow over the Chicone Creek bridge, up the hill—Handsell will appear on your right in the field about 1/4 mile. (she’s the only one there)!

From Salisbury:  Route 13 to route 50 West towards Cambridge.  Just over the Nanticoke River bridge, take first exit to Vienna, Rt. 331-follow above in bold.
